What is the difference between the magnetic properties of 304 and 316 stainless steel?

Magnetic and non-Magnetic Stainless Steel

There are several families of stainless steels with different physical properties. The magnetic properties of stainless steel are very dependent on the elements added into the alloy. A basic stainless steel has a ‘ferritic’ structure and is magnetic, formed from the addition of chromium – it can be hardened through the addition of carbon, making it ‘martensitic’. However, the most common stainless steels are ‘austenitic’ – these have a higher chromium content and nickel is also added. It is the nickel which modifies the physical structure of the steel and makes it theoretically non-magnetic.

304 stainless steel contains chromium (min. 18%), and nickel (min. 8%). It is an austenite steel and is only slightly responsive to magnetic fields. It also contains 18 – 20% chromium and 8-10.50% nickel, and lesser quantities of some other elements.

316 stainless steel is a molybdenum-alloyed steel. The fact that it is also negligibly responsive to magnetic fields means that it can be used in applications where a non-magnetic metal is required. It also contains a number of other elements in varying concentrations.

Type Analysis of Stainless Steel

Steel composition

Steel composition detail

Transformation from non-magnetic to magnetic phases

As both 316 and 304 stainless steels are austenitic, when they cool, the iron remains in the form of austenite (gamma iron), a phase of iron which is nonmagnetic. The different phases of solid iron correspond to different crystal structures. In other alloys of steel, this high-temperature phase of iron transforms to a magnetic phase when the metal cools. The presence of nickel in the stainless steel alloys stabilizes austenite against this phase transition as the alloy cools to room temperature. This corresponds to a somewhat larger magnetic susceptibility than we might expect for other nonmagnetic materials, but is still well below what might be considered magnetic.

However, this does not mean that you should expect to measure such a low susceptibility on any item of 304 or 316 stainless steel that you encounter. Any process which can change the crystal structure of stainless steel can cause austenite to be converted to the ferromagnetic martensite or ferrite forms of iron. These processes include cold working and welding. It is also possible for austenite to spontaneously convert to martensite at low temperatures. To complicate matters further, the magnetic properties of these alloys depend on the alloy composition. Within the allowed ranges of variation of Ni and Cr, significant differences in magnetic properties may be observed for a given alloy.

Practical implications for removal of stainless steel particles

Both 304 and 316 stainless steel possess paramagnetic characteristics.  As a result of these properties small particles (approx 0.1-3mm dia sphere for example) can be attracted to powerful magnetic separators positioned in the product stream. Depending upon their weight and specifically their weight ratio to magnetic attraction, these small particles will be held to the magnets during the production process.

These can then be removed during the magnet cleaning operation. From our experience 304SS small particles are more likely to be held in the flow than 316 SS particles due to its slightly more magnetic nature.

Auto Scrap Metals and Values

This Post is for the attention of Car, Van or Lorry Repair workshop owners.

If you are an owner of a car, van or lorry repair workshop then Scrap Metal would be something you see quite often, Scrap Metal auto parts build up so quick you would be more inclined to just give it away to a passing scrap collector to regain space to work.

Our advice would be to hang on to the most valuable items as you would see a steady monthly income flowing back into your motor repair business for just by selling these waste metal auto parts to scrap metal merchants like us.

Car Scrap items worth selling as follows

Car Batteries
Alternators
Brake Discs
Gear Boxes
Car Looms
Alloy Wheels
Catalytic converters
DPF's

Below is a list of items not worth hanging on to if you short of space.

Body panels
Exhaust systems
Break Pads
Clutches
Break Shoes

Reason being these items are only light iron which is the least valuable type of metal and you would need 5-10 times more in weight to generate the same amount of money compared to the items on the other list.

There is no collection charge for valuable auto scrap metals, we just weigh your items pay you the price which has been calculated by bank transfer then load it all up, it's as simple as that, once your bank details are on system it becomes even quicker as we just click a few buttons and your cleared funds will be in your bank in an instant.

Please note we do not take away car body shells and most scrap yards will still require a logbook to allow a delivery or collection of a scrap car body shell.

Chinese scientists have turned copper into a material that's 'almost identical' to gold

https://www.businessinsider.com/gold-chinese-scientists-turn-copper-into-similar-material-2018-12?r=US&IR=T

Chinese scientists have turned copper into a material that is "almost identical" to gold, a new study says.
  • The new material will reduce the use of rare, expensive metals in factories, the authors say.
A team of Chinese researchers has turned cheap copper into a new material "almost identical" to gold, according to a study published on Saturday in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances.
The discovery could significantly reduce the use of rare, expensive metals in factories, the authors said.
Professor Sun Jian and his colleagues at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Liaoning, shot a copper target with a jet of hot, electrically charged argon gas.
The fast-moving ionised particles blasted copper atoms off the target. The atoms cooled down and condensed on the surface of a collecting device, producing a thin layer of sand.
Each grain of the sand had a diameter of only a few nanometres, or a thousandth of the size of a bacterium.
The researchers put the material in a reaction chamber and used it as a catalyst to turn coal to alcohol, a sophisticated and difficult chemical process that only precious metals can handle efficiently.
"The copper nano particles achieved catalytic performance extremely similar to that of gold or silver," Sun and collaborators said in a statement posted on the academy's website on Saturday.
"The results … proved that after processing, metal copper can transform from 'chicken' to 'phoenix,'" said Sun, who was not immediately available for comment.
Copper has a similar weight and look to gold. For centuries it has attracted alchemists who saw it as a gateway to instant riches.
The new material created by Sun's lab cannot be used to make fake gold pennies. Its density remains the same as ordinary copper.
But the process could prove lucrative and provide a significant boost for Chinese industries, according to the researchers.
Precious metals remain central to modern economies. The components of electronic devices, for instance, contain a large amount of gold, silver, and platinum.
About 40 smartphones can contain as much gold as a ton of ore, it has been estimated.
Copper cannot function as well as gold in industrial applications, mainly because there are fewer electrons — subatomic particles with negative charge — buzzing around its nucleus.
These electrons are also relatively unstable, so copper tends to react more easily when combining with other chemicals.
The method developed by Sun's team can inject a large amount of energy into copper atoms and made the electrons more dense and stable, they said.
The new material can resist high temperatures, oxidisation, and erosion, according to the researchers.
It is "like a warrior with golden armour in a battlefield, capable of withstanding any enemy assault," they said.

SCRAP CABLE COLLECTIONS IN LONDON, HERTS, SURREY, BUCKS, ESSEX & BEDS

WE COLLECT SCRAP CABLE FROM LONDON & OTHER SURROUNDING AREAS

Below is a photo of some cable being weighed, we weigh your cables and pay you our best scrap cable price per kilogram.
As mentioned in the title we will collect from your location this includes London, Hertfordshire, Surrey, Essex, Bedfordshire, Middlesex and Buckinghamshire, Sometimes we can't collect if there's only a small amount as this cannot generate enough profit to cover fuel etc, however you are always welcome to drop it to our scrap yard in Wembley.
Payments are also settled straight after everything is weighed and proof of ownership paperwork signed.

Don't forget to remove all plugs and fixtures from your cables as plugs and fixtures can reduce the price by quite a large amount, Also please check there is no fiber optic cable mixed in as this has no value and we may have to reduce the price for the time it takes to remove it, we would also have to estimate an overall reduction in weight of your cable if fiber optic cable is present.

Here is a picture of some cable being weighed, it will then be loaded into the van just behind, then soon after the next pile of cable can be placed on the pallet and weighed, we also use wheelie bins which we find very easy for weighing cable.

Having a Scrap Metal Collection done is very beneficial if you are a very busy person, as we can save you a lot of time and save you paying for fuel to drive your vehicle to our scrap yard.

Booking a scrap metal collection is easy too, it just takes one phone call or a text message or even an email if you prefer, which ever way you decide to contact us rest assured we will make sure we get you booked in the nearest available time slot.

ALWAYS BEST TO USE A LICENSED WASTE COLLECTOR

Builder Fined almost £2,500 for fly-tipping in Bricket Wood

image of flytipped waste
The bath, toilet and wooden sign were dumped in Drop Lane
Here is an Article from Local paper showing what kind of problems you may encounter if you use an unlicensed waste collector.

Once you read the article you will agree it's just make no sense to use unlicensed waste collectors.

A builder has been charged almost £2,500 for fly-tipping – after he trusted a van driver to dispose of his waste.
Mr Ziwu Chen, of Whitchurch Lane, Edgware, gave the man a bath, toilet and wooden sign to get rid of. But the driver then dumped the waste in Drop Lane, Bricket Wood, on December 15.
Although Mr Chen never fly-tipped, by not checking the driver had a proper waste carrier’s licence, he was charged with failing to discharge his duty of care in disposing of waste.
Mr Chen pleaded guilty at St Albans Magistrates' Court on November 30 and was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay the council £881 towards legal costs.

He also had to pay compensation of £448.37 for waste removal costs and a victim surcharge of £100.
Last year fly-tipping cost St Albans District Council £41,420 to clear up.
Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles, responsible for environment, said: “Fly-tipping leaves a real blight on the landscape and is hated by most people.
“Everyone has a legal duty of care to ensure their waste is disposed of responsibly. Remember to take your waste to a local authority waste site or, if you run a business, use a waste carrier registered with the Environment Agency.”

If you are looking for a Licensed waste company to dispose your waste then give us call on 07802780631

Paper and Cardboard Recycling

Recycled Cardboard and paper prices are quite low for this reason we have to charge to remove your waste cardboard and paper the good news is we can do a collection for you at a better rate than general waste, Your waste paper and cardboard will also be 100 percent recycled.

For us to be able to collect your waste cardboard & paper at a discounted rate, you will need to have a van load that is just made up of clean paper and cardboard, no plastic or metal attachments etc.

If you have a large office to clear and you have the time to separate your waste cardboard and paper from the other waste then it would work out much more economical to do so.

It is possible that one day the cardboard and paper prices could rocket if that time ever comes, we would review our prices to collect your cardboard and paper waste and if the prices where high enough we would even consider doing that for free.

For more information here's our cardboard recycling website.

SELL YOUR SCRAP BY PARCEL

Selling scrap by parcel is a new idea I have come up with for customers who can not deliver to us and are too far for us to collect from.

I had this website built a while back http://www.ukscrapmetal.co.uk/ for customers wanting to try this new service.

Scrap by parcel is a bit similar to a postal gold service except the parcels are a lot bigger.

Please note this service would not be worthwhile for Ferrous metals like iron and steel or lower rate non -ferrous metals like aluminium, stainless steel.

All types of Copper, Brass, Gunmetal would work well using the"Scrap By Parcel" system.

There are great parcel deals on this site https://www.parcel2go.com/
I found a deal where UPS would collect and deliver a fairly large box 55cm Height 55cm Depth 55cm Width and weighing up to 70kg for around £28.

So let say you had 70kg of Dry Bright Copper, I would offer anything between £2.60-£3.00 per kg depending on the markets, So the value would be between £182-£210 after you have paid delivery £28 you would be left with £154-£182.

I'm not sure if any other companies are doing this service yet, maybe the bigger scrap dealers would not have the time for this, Maybe my company Wembley Recycling Ltd is the first company in the Uk to offer this service.

If you have some scrap metal you would like to post, you can send an email to freescrapmetalclearance@gmail.com for more details.

The fridge was found and reported to the council by Veolia, its waste and recycling contractor.
Dennis Lewis, waste enforcement manager at Brent Council, said: “Illegally dumped rubbish is a serious issue and once reported to the council we will take all necessary measures to investigate the incident and won’t hesitate to prosecute the offenders”.
Brent Council has launched a ‘love where you live’ campaign urging residents to report any instances of illegal dumping to improve their neighbourhoods.
Cllr Eleanor Southwood, Brent Council’s lead member for the environment, said: “Most residents in Brent ‘Love where they live’ and make an effort to keep their streets clean and green. That’s why it’s so upsetting when people illegally dump rubbish; it brings down the appearance of the area and everyone suffers.
“Individuals and businesses need to know that we’ll come down on them hard if they dump their rubbish like this.
“If you ‘Love where you live’, please report illegally dumping rubbish with our Cleaner Brent app or email customer.services@brent.gov.uk.”
